The Basis of Acceleration Therapeutics

Exer-Rest™ was invented to fulfill an unmet need of providing non-invasive technology for individuals who cannot obtain certain, important benefits of exercise because they are incapable of exercising, unwilling to exercise or want supplemental aid to aerobic exercise. It is based upon increasing the number of pulses in the blood stream to simulate the increased pulse rate associated with exercise. Increasing the number of pulses is known to activate enzymes within the inner lining of blood vessels to cause release of beneficial substances. In contrast to exercise which requires muscular efforts, the Exer-Rest™ adds pulses while the subject is at rest lying on a mattress.
While the motorized platform moves the body on the mattress repetitively at about 140 times a minute over a 30 to 45 minute session the motion of the Exer-Rest™ stimulates release of beneficial substances at similar levels to moderate to strenuous exercise over a comparable time interval. The Exer-Rest™ does not build muscles and strength or reduce body weight because only about 30 calories are expended per session.

Benefits of Exercise
Most people believe that exercise is beneficial because it builds healthy muscles bone and joints, provides a sense of well-being, and keeps body weight under control.
But exercise is much more than that!
Exercise is preventative and therapeutic for many chronic diseases

Suppresses inflammation

Relieves symptoms

Increases fitness or strength

Improves quality of life

Diseases and conditions moderately or strongly benefited by exercise include:
Coronary artery disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, chronic obstructive lung disease, chronic heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, breast, colon and prostate cancer (reduced risk),depression and  asthma.

Exercise might also be beneficial in:
Multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease

How does exercise accomplish these benefits?
By stimulation of enzymes present in the inner lining of blood vessels through increased blood flow and pulse rate to increase release of beneficial substances into the blood stream.

Nitric oxide (abbreviated NO) is the most important molecule of these beneficial substances.

Nitric Oxide:The molecule of the 21st  Century
Nitric oxide (abbreviated NO) is a gas which disappears within 4 seconds of its release into the blood stream.

Unfortunately, scientists have not found a satisfactory way to administer NO as a drug or supplement to achieve the same effects as exercise. Although some drugs releasing NO produce selective effects.

For example, Nitroglycerin and Viagra® promote increased NO and widen the openings of blood vessels in heart pain and erectile dysfunction.

Nitric oxide is much more than a substance that widens the opening of blood vessels!

NO has potent anti-inflammatory properties.
NO improves transmission of neural impulses.
NO improves cognition, balance and learning, particularly in prior brain damage.
NO is anti-arteriosclerosis – it prevents hardening of the arteries.
NO release prior to an unexpected coronary occlusion or stroke limits the extent of heart and stroke damage.
NO produced during moderate exercise has no adverse side effects.

Exer-Rest™ :A supplemental or alternative means to exercise
Exercise programs are met with a high prevalence of non-compliance.
Supplemental or alternative means to exercise are needed to achieve the release of adequate amounts of beneficial substances into the blood stream.
Exer-Rest™, the flagship product of Acceleration Therapeutics, has potential to serve as a supplemental or alternative means to exercise.
Consists of a motorized platform with the appearance and functions of a bed.
Subject lies on a mattress placed on the motorized platform and is moved repetitively head to foot about 140 times a minute over a distance of about 0.65” (1.65 cm) for 30 to 45 minutes.
Platform movements produce whole body periodic acceleration (WBPA).
WBPA adds small pulses to the blood stream that are superimposed on the body’s natural pulse.
The increased number of pulses acting on the inner lining of all blood vessels causes release of nitric oxide (NO) into the blood stream.

Since NO is rapidly metabolized, plasma nitrite must be measured to reflect its increase.

Scientific Support:
A growing body of scientific research demonstrates the basis for the benefits of treatment with Exer-Rest™ or its predecessors, the motion platform and AT-101™.

The repetitive motion of this device creates whole body periodic acceleration (also termed pGz) which adds a pulse to the circulation with each acceleration and deceleration of the body with passive movement from head to foot. These additional smaller pulses that are superimposed on the natural pulse promote release of beneficial substances (mediators) from the inner lining of blood vessels (endothelium) by mechanically deforming endothelial cells, a process called pulsatile shear stress. The latter occurs normally from the pulses generated by the beating heart. Both the Exer-Rest™ and aerobic exercise accentuate this process.  These mediators, particularly nitric oxide (NO), provide widespread therapeutic applications and health benefits that originate from the subject’s own body.

exercise, and loss of skeletal muscle mass as a result of inflammation and catabolism.” They also described vascular aging as a “progressive decrease in flow-mediated, endothelium-dependent vasodilatation” and showed that aging of the cardiovascular system could begin in individuals as young as 25-35 years of age.

In addition, Lakatta and Levy state in a 2003 paper published in Circulation, “There is a continuum of expression of ca rdiac structural and functional alterations that occurs with age in healthy humans, and these age-associated cardiac changes seem to have relevance to the steep increases in LVH, chronic heart failure, and AF seen with increasing age.” It is clear that taking steps to maintain cardiovascular health is an essential component of any Longevity or Rejuvenation Program. No matter how much we may wish otherwise, the fact remains that we cannot stop time.

But is there anything that we can to stop or even reverse the harmful effects that aging and atherosclerosis have on the heart and cardiovascular system? Fortunately, there is. External Counter Pulsation (ECP) is a 50-year-old, non-invasive technology that has proven to be a safe and effective alternative or complement to invasive, high-risk procedures such as angioplasty and bypass surgery. Unlike these conventional treatments that target individual blockages, ECP treats heart disease as a chronic system-wide illness. By recruiting and helping to develop new collateral blood vessels, ECP maximizes blood flow to the heart, as well as throughout the entire body.

Cardiovascular disease affects more than 50 million people in India and is the leading cause of death for Indian men and women, accounting for nearly 1 million fatalities every year. One of the great dangers of heart disease is that it can take 10 to 20 years to develop. While there are certain genetic risk factors that can predispose one to the development of hesart disease – such as diabetes, hypertension, familial hyperlipidemia, high levels of homocysteine, and auto-immune or inflammatory processes – as well as acquired lifestyle risk factors, such as smoking, improper nutrition, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, stress, and type II diabetes – coronary artery disease still often goes undetected until the heart and circulatory system have been seriously compromised. Therefore, an individual may experience no warning signs, not even pain, until he or she suffers a heart attack.

Conventional Management of Heart Disease

Traditionally, strategies for managing cardiovascular disease have focused on the modification of risk factors (poor diet/nutrition, lack of exercise, smoking), medication, and surgical procedures such as angioplasty and bypass surgery, which treat the illness as a “plumbing problem” and focus on opening or bypassing blockages in the vessels of the heart. Despite these interventions, 20% of patients who receive stents, 54% of patients who receive angioplasty, and 8% of patients who receive bypass surgery require repeat surgeries/procedures within a few years, and a significant number of people continue to suffer from frequent, severe, and disabling angina. It is clear that if we rely on these strategies alone, we will continue to fail these people.

A Non-Invasive Strategy for the Management of Heart Disease

External Counter Pulsation (ECP) is a completely non-invasive therapy, which causes minimal, if any, patient discomfort. Approved by the FDA (USA) and covered both by Medicare and by most major health plans in USA, a typical course of treatment of ECP costs only Rs.50,000/- to Rs.80,000/- in India. This is merely a fraction of the cost of angioplasty or bypass surgery, which can cost between rupees 1.5 lakhs and 3.5 lakhs . Despite the fact that many consider ECP a “low-tech” procedure, research has documented conclusively that this treatment significantly reduces mortality in the setting of acute myocardial infarction and/or cardiogenic shock. Furthermore, patients who undergo ECP use less nitroglycerine and experience fewer anginal episodes. Many patients report complete resolution of their angina. Additionally, when combined with conventional treatments, ECP will enhance their overall effectiveness.
